For a basic rectangular shaped patio you will need the following supplies: stakes and string, shovel, landscaping fabric, 2 x 6 boards, expansion joint material, gravel, sand, paving bricks or stones and a broom. Of course if you are using a specific set of plans your supplies list may differ from the one above. Patio building supplies can be purchased at most any home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot.

These stores carry everything you need to put together the perfect patio. In addition to the building supplies needed you will also find patio furniture and a variety of outdoor accessories. Many people have a grill on their patio. Container gardens are perfect for the patio area and luckily these stores carry garden supplies as well. Wind chimes and decorative figurines are other items you may want to consider when shopping for your new patio.

Basically the construction of a patio involves digging a rectangular area the size you want your patio to be plus two inches extra for the frame. The frame encloses a gravel and sand filled area on top of which your paving stones or bricks are secured. After your paving bricks are installed you will toss a light layer of sand over the patio and brush it off with a broom. Of course this is the condensed version of how to build a patio.
